Ship Operation & Ice Navigation

The course provides knowledge, understanding and proficiency required for operating a ship in ice-covered waters, including recognition of ice formation and characteristics; ice indications; ice manoeuvring; use of ice forecasts, atlases and codes; hull stress caused by ice; ice escort operations; ice-breaking operations and effect of ice accretion on vessel stability.

The course also covers subjects such as preparing the vessel, equipment and crew for sailing in ice conditions. Theory is illustrated with practical exercises in the simulator where course participants are trained to navigate and manoeuvre ships in ice covered waters with or without the assistance of an ice breaker.
